Tests sought on man who died in Pa. police custody

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities in western Pennsylvania say more tests will be needed to determine what caused the death of a man following his arrest by East Pittsburgh police.

Officers responded shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday to a report that a man was trying to force his way into a home.

Police said 32-year-old Gary Beto of East Pittsburgh was arrested but later suffered some kind of medical emergency and died at a local hospital.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday that officials were waiting for the results of toxicology tests before ruling on the cause and manner of death.

Lt. Andrew Schurman of the county police department said investigators are looking into the possibility that drugs contributed to the man’s actions.
