A fatal crash in Mercer County claimed the lives of three people Friday.

It happened on Interstate 79 just after 6 p.m. south of the Crawford County line.

Pennsylvania State police said 62-year old Robert Newbert II, 62, of Amherst, N.Y. crashed into a vehicle driven by Susan Thomas, 54, of Sewickley.

Thomas’ vehicle went over a guard rail and landed on its side.

Mary Carmody, 44, was a passenger in Thomas’ vehicle and died along with both drivers.

The Northbound lanes of I-79 were closed for over three hours. Traffic was backed up for four miles.
