Mercer’s Brayton Edwards returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter as the Mustangs topped Sharpsville 6-0 Saturday night at Mercer High School.

The only score of the night came after Mercer’s Troy Segulla sacked Sharpsville’s quarterback and forced the fumble to set up Edwards rumble to the end zone.

Sharpsville had its opportunities to score following the early miscue.  In the closing seconds of the first half, the Blue Devils were facing third and goal with no timeouts left.   That’s when Edwards struck again finding his way into the backfield for a sack.  Sharpsville failed to get another play off before halftime.

In the second half,  Sharpsville had a few opportunities to score missing a field goal and being turned away in the 4th quarter on another Mercer red zone stand.

Mercer is now 2-0.  Sharpsville drops to 1-1.
