COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio Republican Party says it’s filing an elections complaint against Democratic gubernatorial contender Ed FitzGerald alleging he failed to properly refund an improper campaign contribution.
GOP Chairman Matt Borges said Monday the complaint will go to the Ohio Elections Commission.
At issue is a $1,000 contribution FitzGerald received from banker J.W. Sean Dorsey in April, a week after nominating the League Park Advisors CEO to a local economic-development board.
Campaign finance guidelines FitzGerald implemented as he took over as Cuyahoga County executive after a local corruption scandal prohibit donations from a politician’s appointees. Republicans have asked the county watchdog to determine whether FitzGerald’s receipt and failure to promptly report Dorsey’s donation violated the county law.
FitzGerald said Monday a delay in returning the contribution does not represent corruption.
