The Youngstown State women’s basketball team will play a school record 17 games at Beeghly Center as part of an attractive 2013-14 home schedule that features six doubleheaders with the YSU men’s program in head coach John Barnes’ first season.
The Penguins will welcome West Virginia and Cincinnati to campus in the upcoming season, and they’ll also host a lunch-time affair against Malone the first Monday of winter break. Highlighting the road schedule is a short trip to Akron and a contest against a Delaware team that won 32 games last year. The home and season opener will be Saturday, Nov. 9, against VCU, and Horizon League play will open at Valparaiso on Jan. 9.
“We are thrilled to be able to play so many home games in front of our fans this season,” Barnes said. “The opportunity to play teams like West Virginia and Cincinnati at home is very exciting. The non-conference schedule will definitely challenge us and hopefully prepare us for what will be a very competitive season in the Horizon League.”
Youngstown State will play eight of its first nine games of the season wearing the home white jerseys. After hosting VCU on Nov. 9, the Penguins will play home games against Buffalo and Northern Kentucky before heading to Bucknell on Nov. 26. YSU will then play West Virginia (Nov. 30), Miami (Ohio) (Dec. 4) and Cincinnati (Dec. 8) over a nine-day stretch at Beeghly Center prior to finals week. After a game against Ohio Valley on Dec. 13, the Penguins will host Malone in a special 11:05 a.m. contest on Dec. 16.
YSU will then play Delaware in the first round of a tournament at Lehigh on Dec. 20, and the Penguins will play either the host Mountain Hawks or Vermont the following day. A game at Akron on Dec. 29 will follow, and Youngstown State will conclude the non-conference schedule with a home game against IUPUI on Jan. 4.
The Penguins will open conference play at Valparaiso on Jan. 9 and at UIC on Jan. 11. They’ll then play four straight league games at Beeghly Center the rest of the month against defending champion Green Bay (Jan. 16), Milwaukee (Jan. 18), league newcomer Oakland (Jan. 25) and Detroit (Jan. 29).
In contrast, YSU will play five of its seven games in February on the road, starting with contests at Cleveland State (Feb. 1) and Wright State (Feb. 5) to end the first half of league play. The Penguins will open the second half at Oakland on Feb. 8 before returning home to face Valparaiso on Feb. 15 in the final doubleheader of the season. YSU will travel to Milwaukee and Green Bay on Feb. 21 and 23, and its February schedule will conclude at home against UIC on Feb. 27.
The Penguins will play at Detroit on March 1, and they’ll end the regular season by hosting Wright State on March 5 and Cleveland State on March 8.
The first round of the Horizon League Tournament will be March 10, and the Championship Game will be March 16.
The six home doubleheaders will be Nov. 20, Nov. 30, Dec. 4, Jan. 18, Jan. 25 and Feb. 15. Additionally, both the YSU women and men will play at Wright State on Feb. 5 as part of a doubleheader at the Nutter Center.
