Curbside leaf pickup canceled

Commissioners

Mahoning County Commissioners on Tuesday canceled curbside leaf pickup for this fall.

Commissioners said budget reductions at the Mahoning County Solid Waste District caused them to scale back its leaf collection programs.

The policy committee voted to set up central drop-off sites in 10 communities in the county, similar to those used for Christmas trees after the holidays.

Curbside leaf pickup costs about $74,000 and drop-off sites cost about $10,000 commissioners said.

The leaf pickup points will be open in mid-October and run through mid-November.

“I think the city and the townships all are willing to work with us on that issue,” said commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti. “I mean we’re not going to be able to afford to do it at that extent that we did last year.”
