Box set features songs from iconic NY coffeehouse

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Songs performed by some of the biggest names in folk music at the oldest continuously operating coffeehouse in the U.S. are being released on a three-CD box set.

“Live At Caffe Lena: Music From America’s Legendary Coffeehouse” includes nearly 50 songs recorded at the Saratoga Springs music venue between 1967 and 2013. Performers include Dave Van Ronk, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Bromberg and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.

Lena Spencer ran her coffeehouse from 1960 until her death in 1989. Among her performers in the early 1960s was Van Ronk’s friend, Bob Dylan.

Operating as a nonprofit organization, Caffe Lena still stages folk music from the second-floor of a commercial building in downtown Saratoga.

The box set is being released Sept. 24.
