Who has the heart of a champion?

A new award will be handed out to high school student athletes beginning this football season.

The Coach John Kopp Heart of a Champion Award, sponsored by the law firm of Betras, Kopp and Harsham, will be presented to the athlete who demonstrates extraordinary courage and determination.

The award is named after the father of Attorney Brian Kopp. John Kopp was a beloved Valley coach serving as coach or assistant coach at Wilson High School, Chaney, Austintown Fitch, Mooney and Ursuline. He also played football for the University of Pittsburgh.

“Really a humbling experience, but it’s a great thing that they are giving back to the student athletes in the area,” said Kopp. “It is an honor for myself and my family.”

Students who win the award will be given a trophy, a plaque for the school and $2,500 to be used by the school’s athletic program.

Fans will have the opportunity to vote for the players after every game during the 2013 football season. Voting for girls and boys basketball will begin as the season kicks off this winter.
