The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident on Interstate 80 in Hubbard Township on Saturday.
The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. The driver of a tractor-trailer lost control, drove off the bridge and fell on to Mt. Everett Road below. The rig exploded, killing the driver. CSX had to close down the railroad until the trailer, full of fruit, blocking the tracks could be cleaned up.
“It could have been a lot worse. We had one fatality and the others seem to be fine with no serious injuries,” said Sgt. Bret Henderson, Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Larry J. Johnson, 57, of Chicago, Illinois was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Drivers approaching the scene of the accident on Interstate 80 didn’t know where the debris was coming from, and led to another multi-vehicle accident.
Interstate 80 eastbound was closed for almost two hours while scene was cleaned up and the Ohio Department of Transportation made sure the bridge was still structurally sound.
The accident remains under investigation.
