Cleveland teen pleads guilty in girlfriend’s death

CLEVELAND (AP) — An Ohio teenager has pleaded guilty to charges accusing him of shooting and killing his girlfriend in February in Cleveland.

Anthony W. Ruiz, 17,  on Monday pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated murder and firearms-related charges. He is being tried as an adult in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

His attorney, Ralph DeFranco, says his client is significantly remorseful for what he did.

Prosecutors say then-16-year-old Ruiz fatally shot Jennifer Zacarias in her backyard. They say Zacarias, who was pregnant, was shot in the head, neck and torso. Her father found her shortly after midnight on Feb. 8.

Ruiz initially faced a separate count charging him with the death of an unborn 15-week-old fetus.

He faces a minimum conviction of 23 years in prison.
