Ohio captor’s death left victim’s dad ‘speechless’

LORAIN, Ohio (AP) — The father of one of three Cleveland women held captive for a decade says his family is “speechless” and surprised by the kidnapper’s suicide in prison.

The Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria (http://bit.ly/1ehOqsF ) reports Felix DeJesus made the brief comments before appearing Saturday at the Hispanic Heritage parade in Lorain.

He said he and his wife were attending the parade along with one of the other victims, Michelle Knight, to draw attention to other kidnapping cases and efforts to reduce human trafficking.

The women’s captor, 53-year-old Ariel Castro, hanged himself in prison in early September, about a month into his life sentence. He’d pleaded guilty in a deal to avoid the death penalty.

Through a law firm, the three women had earlier declined to comment on the suicide.
