Ohio commissions report on prison inmate suicides

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio has commissioned a review of two high-profile prison inmate suicides by two of the country’s leading criminal justice experts.

The review will look at the Sept. 3 suicide of Cleveland kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro and the Aug. 4 suicide of death row inmate Billy Slagle just days before his scheduled execution.

The consultants hired by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will also review prison inmate suicides over the past two years.

Prisons director Gary Mohr said Tuesday the review will examine the agency’s policies and procedures for preventing suicides to determine if changes are needed.

Mohr is promising consultants Fred Cohen and Lindsay Hayes complete access to inmates and staff.
