DA probing audit of Erie’s St. Peter Cathedral

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — The district attorney is investigating an audit that shows St. Peter Cathedral parish and school in Erie is about $500,000 in debt.

Erie Bishop Lawrence Persico hired auditors after the Internal Revenue Service filed a $301,000 lien against the school for unpaid employee withholding taxes. Donors have since paid the taxes and the bishop says a settlement on penalties and interest was being negotiated.

But now the Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/14ewSbk ) reports Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri’s office is investigating the audit’s findings. Daneri says he doesn’t know how long that will take.

Bishop Persico says in a statement that he can’t provide more details “until the district attorney makes a decision about the appropriate legal actions to be taken.”
