French citizen dies in police custody in Egypt

PARIS (AP) — France’s foreign ministry says a Frenchman died while in police custody in the Egyptian capital.

Ministry spokesman Vincent Floreani said Tuesday that French authorities were seeking details from Egyptian officials about the death in Cairo on Friday. The victim, whom he did not identify, had been residing in Egypt.

Floreani says the victim’s family in France has been contacted.

Security has been tenuous in Egypt in recent months. Violence against security and government buildings in Cairo, the country’s south and in the restive northern Sinai region has spiked since former Islamist president Mohammed Morsi was ousted in a July 3 military coup.

Authorities have put the country under emergency law for more than a month, and a nighttime curfew has been imposed in many cities.
