Girard sign to be replaced

Plans are in place to replace Girard High School’s well-known “G” sign at Arrowhead Stadium.

Girard Schools Superintendent David Cappuzzello said Tuesday a number of local companies, including AJ Construction, which built the original plywood sign, are volunteering to make two replacement signs.

Someone destroyed the signs on Sunday and police are still investigating. Officials said they believe the student or students responsible were from Girard.

The temporary sign should be ready by Friday and the permanent sign, which will be made of steel, will be ready sometime in the future.

Labor and materials for the new steel sign are being donated to the school.

“It’s going to be better than the one we had there,” Cappuzzello said. “And in the meantime, Tommy Molito is going to be constructing a steel ‘G’ that looks just like it and that will be the permanent home.”
