Ohio State weighs sports, medical school emphasis

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The committee searching for Ohio State University’s next president is weighing the best way to emphasize the need for experience running a huge medical school and a large athletics program.

University trustee and search committee chairman Jeffrey Wadsworth says it’s important to include athletics in the candidate profile because college sports have tripped up a number of people at universities across the country.

Wadsworth also notes that half the university’s revenue comes from its medical center, making experience in that area and athletics a plus.

Law professor Deborah Merritt, leading the committee writing a profile of the ideal candidate, says a balance has to be struck since the goal is not to rule out good candidates just because they lack experience in certain areas.
