Former fire chief gets final sendoff

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) — The city of Girard said goodbye to a longtime former fire chief Friday morning.

Danny Merwin, 71,  died of cancer earlier this week at the Hospice House. His funeral procession to Brunstetter Cemetery in Austintown ran right past the Girard fire house on Liberty Street, where firefighters saluted their former chief.

Merwin worked as a firefighter for 37 years before becoming chief in 1990. He retired in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, son and two grandsons.
