Man charged in wife’s death to be in nursing home

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio judge has ordered that an elderly Ohio man who was found incompetent to stand trial in the stabbing death of his wife be placed at a nursing home.

A Franklin County judge on Friday ruled that 72-year-old Leif Mortensen be held at a nursing home instead of a state-run psychiatric hospital as prosecutors had asked.

Police say Mortensen called 911 about his wife’s death Feb. 13 and tried to cut his own throat. He said he’d never hurt his wife before and didn’t know why he did it.

Mortensen was found incompetent for trial in August after psychologists determined he suffers dementia. His attorney, R. Kevin Kerns, says Mortensen’s family is pleased he’ll be in a facility where his health care needs can be met.
