Mother found guilty of drowning son in W. Pa.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh jury has found a West Virginia woman guilty of first-degree murder in the drowning of her 2-year-old son in a suburban hotel bathtub.

After the verdict Friday 34-year-old Sharon Flanagan burst into tears and pleaded with the judge, who had her removed from the courtroom. She is expected to be sentenced to life without parole on Dec. 9.

Prosecutors say the Inwood, W.Va. woman killed her son to get back at her husband because she was unhappy that he had been granted 70 percent custody during a bitter divorce.

Flanagan claimed she was distracted at the time of the July, 2012 drowning, but didn’t intentionally harm the boy.
