Retrial jury convicts man in Kent St student death

RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of fatally beating a Kent State University student in a 2009 street fight has been convicted of murder and felonious assault.

The verdict in the retrial of Adrian Barker, of Shaker Heights, came Thursday. The 25-year-old Barker was a University of Akron student when accused of killing Christopher Kernich, of Fairborn.

Portage County Common Pleas Judge John Enlow immediately sentenced Barker to 15 years to life in prison — the same sentence he received during his 2010 trial.

Barker won a new trial when an Ohio appeals court reversed his convictions after ruling Enlow failed to tell jurors they could consider convictions on lesser charges.

Barker’s attorney John Lewis says the defense will review the case’s record to decide on what grounds the verdict could be appealed.
