Pa. school official charged in student sex case

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — An assistant principal at a central Pennsylvania public high school is accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with a student.

Shawn Sharkey was charged Friday, and WHTM-TV in Harrisburg reported that he turned himself in Saturday.

The Susquehanna Township School District says it plans to fire Sharkey.

Court filings show that Sharkey was charged with sexual contact with a student, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor. Court records don’t list a lawyer for Sharkey and no one answered the telephone Saturday at his Abington home.

Authorities say the 45-year-old Sharkey had at least 10 different sexual encounters between February and March with a then-16-year-old student. Sharkey told police that he’d had no inappropriate contact with her.
