More gunfire at mall; Kenyan forces say they rescued ‘most’ hostages

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — More gunfire Monday indicates that the siege at an upscale mall in Kenya isn’t quite over, though the military says it rescued “most” of the hostages being held captive by al-Qaida-linked militants during a major operation Sunday.

About five minutes of sustained gunfire could be heard at the mall in Nairobi, a clear indication that at least one gunman was still free and that the standoff continues.

The military assault began shortly before sundown on Sunday, Kenya time. The Kenya Defense Forces later said it had taken control of most of the mall, though it did not provide details.

Authorities haven’t said how many hostages were rescued or how many are still being held.

The assault came about 30 hours after 10 to 15 al-Shabab extremists stormed the mall Saturday from two sides, throwing grenades and firing on civilians. Al-Shebab is based in Somalia.
