The nation’s weather

Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, September 27, 2013.

A well defined cold front with plenty of precipitation will extend from the Southwest, through the Rockies and into the upper Midwest on Friday, while cool, clear conditions will persist in the Northeast.

The Pacific Northwest will continue to experience wet weather on Friday as another cold front boundary approaches the region. Washington and northwest Oregon can expect spotty showers during the day, but things should pick up in the evening as the cold front approaches the coast.

Rain and snow will impact the central Rockies on Friday as a separate, extensive cold front passes over the area. Although precipitation will not extend into Arizona, cooler conditions are expected in the Southwest following the cold front . The central Rockies will experience heavy snow showers early Friday morning, but things should taper off during the day as the cold front moves further east. Showers and thunderstorms will extend into the northern Plains and upper Midwest as a result of a warm, moist air mass interacting with cold air along the cold front. Most of the southern Plains will remain clear of this storm system, although parts of northern Texas and western Oklahoma may experience severe thunderstorms.

Meanwhile in the Northeast, a system of high pressure will continue to draw cool air from Canada into New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. Temperatures will remain in the 60s and 70s during the day, and drop into the 40s and 50s at night. Humidity values will also stay low due to the influence of this high pressure system. The coast of Georgia and parts of Florida may experience spotty thunderstorms on Friday as a cold front inches further out to sea.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday have ranged from a morning low of 24 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif. to a high of 96 degrees at Shawnee, Okla.
