Western Reserve wins battle of Blue Devils


MCDONALD –  In the battle of Blue Devils, its Western Reserve with a 24-14 victory.

In the first quarter, Joe Falasca pulled down a 57 yard touchdown pass, his seventh on the season, the put Western Reserve up by a touchdown.

Then, with eight minutes remaining in the first half, it was Falasca again, this time from 47 yards out to push the lead to 14-0.

Needing a boost, McDonald’s defense stepped up and put the Blue Devils on the board. A Falasca fumble on the Western Reserve 22 yard line was scooped up by Zack Conley and returned for a touchdown with 4:05 remaining in the half, to shrink the Western Reserve lead to 14-6.

With 2:56 left in 3rd quarter, Western Reserve added three on a 37 yard Parker Clegg field goal.

A fourth quarter safety by the McDonald defense made it 17-8.

Western Reserve gave themselves a little breathing room with just over two minutes left in the game on a Dan Zilke 23 yard run, pushing their lead to 24-8.

On the ensuing kick, Western Reserve attempted an on-side kick that was picked up by McDonald’s Caleb Dimery who returned it for a score to get McDonald back within 10, 24-14.

Western Reserve will head to Leetonia next week.

McDonald will look to rebound next week when they travel to Mineral Ridge.
