Ethiopian wins Akron Marathon by 3 seconds

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ethiopian has won the Akron Marathon by three seconds.

Twenty-four-year-old Getachew Asfaw, who trains in Silver Spring, Md., won Saturday’s marathon in a time of two hours, 15 minutes and 59 seconds.

The second-place finisher three seconds back was Kenyan Josef Mutinda, who is based in Santa Fe, N.M.

Fifteen-thousand runners signed up for the marathon and related races with a special overseas military touch.

The marathon invited Ohio Army National Guard members serving in Kuwait to participate in a “shadow race” at their overseas camp.
