Ohio railway makes list of best family train trips

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A popular tourist attraction in southeastern Ohio’s Athens County has been named among the world’s best train trips for families.

The Athens Messenger reports (http://bit.ly/1eHL6HH) that the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville made the Travel Channel’s list of 12 railways that are perfect for families.

The historic railway attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Athens County annually.

Founded in 1972, the railway offers diesel-powered rides on the vintage railcars. Passengers can choose among 1920s commuter cars, open-air cars, a 1940 air-conditioned coach or a two-level car built in 1970.

The railway is a nonprofit and is operated solely by volunteers.

Other train rides that made the list include the Grand Canyon Railway, the Niagara Falls Train and the Harry Potter Train in Scotland.
