Rare suicide attack in Iraq’s north kills 4 people

BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say a double suicide car bomb attack in the capital of Iraq’s self-ruled northern Kurdish region has killed at least four members of the security forces.

Hamza Hamid Mohammed, who is spokesman for Irbil province, says a suicide car bomber tried Sunday afternoon to ram his car into a checkpoint leading to a complex housing the Interior Ministry and other security agencies in Irbil city. Mohammed said that another car bomber followed shortly behind.

He said there was gunfire, but had no other details yet. Health Minister Raikot Hama Rasheed put the death toll at four in addition to 29 wounded.

The Kurdish self-rule region has been largely peaceful compared to the rest of Iraq.
