YFD swears in new firefighters

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Youngstown Fire Department has two new firefighters.

Donovan Fletcher of Niles and Phillip Wilson of Youngstown were both sworn in Monday morning during a ceremony at Fire Station Number One in downtown Youngstown.

The men replace two retiring firefighters, which keeps the department at full staff.

“The key it is to make sure all the trucks in the city are operational at all times,” said Chief John O’Neill. “We found 138 personnel really fits well, cuts down on overtime due to injury and illness, things like that. I think it’s the most efficient way to run.”

O’Neill said if the weather cooperates, the new fire station on Midlothian Boulevard should be completed by early 2014.
