NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The founder of the Newport jazz and folk festivals is being honored with a New Englander of the Year award.
Festival promoter George Wein (ween) will receive the award from the New England Council at its annual dinner Wednesday at Boston’s Seaport Hotel.
The 88-year-old Wein produced the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 and later created the Newport Folk Festival.
Besides Wein, other New Englander of the Year awards will presented to Republican U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire; attorney Kenneth Feinberg, administrator of The One Fund Boston; and Putnam Investments CEO Robert Reynolds.
The award is intended to recognize New Englanders for their contributions to the region.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The New England Council represents businesses throughout the six-state region.
