YORK, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in central Pennsylvania say a man and woman found dead after a 4Â½-hour standoff overnight during which police were fired upon repeatedly died in a murder-suicide.
York Area Regional Police were called to a home in York Township just outside of Red Lion at about 11 p.m. Tuesday but said someone started firing shots from the residence and continued shooting for more than an hour, prompting evacuation of neighbors.
Police later entered and found two people dead. Coroner Pam Gay said 24-year-old Jessica Mellinger of New Freedom was shot in the chest and was a homicide victim. She said 24-year-old John Snyder, a resident of the home, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Gay said several other family members lived there as well but fled when the crisis began.
