Wendell August seeking fee relief

Wendell August president Will Knecht

Wendell August Forge is disputing a fee Mercer County charged them during a grant application, saying the price tag is just too high.

The company rebuilt their showroom and storage facility after fire destroyed the original facility in 2010. To help with construction costs, Wendell August applied for a grant from the State of Pennsylvania, but it needed the county to administer the process. The county then charged the business a $30,000 fee, which company officials say is too much and they want it waived.

“Ideally, it would be totally waived, but we are willing to recognize the hours the county put in on our behalf and pay for those hours. But we believe that amount charged is a little bit more than what has been put in time wise,” said Will Knecht with Wendell August Forge.

Knecht said he signed the document supporting the fee because he was pressed for time and needed to get the process started for the funding so they could rebuild the store.

“At a future point in time we would be making a plea for relief,” said Knecht.

Mercer County Commissioners agreed to discuss the matter and determine if they will waive the fee or reconsider the amount.
