BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – There was no shortage of flavor at a chili cook-off in Boardman on Sunday.
Close to 20 cooks whipped up their signature chili for the Sue Hernan Memorial Chili Cook-off, held at Boardman United Methodist Church. The event helps fund mission projects for the church.
Sue drowned while saving her grandchildren in Berlin Lake.
Sue’s husband, Don Herman, whipped up his own chili for the contest, saying his wife liked competition.
“This is an opportunity to compete and have fun. And I compete a lot with family here, and they take a lot of pride in doing well at this,” said Hernan.
Contestant Cindy Bailey said contest is one small way to honor’s Sue’s memory.
“Sue was just one of those unbelievably, spectacular, amazing people. And it’s just something that I feel so privileged to do in her honor,” said Bailey.
Taking first place in the cook-off was Kerrie Donchess. Second place went to Colleen Hendel and third place was won by Jeremy Hernan.
WKBN 27 First News this Morning anchors, Damon Maloney and Amy Radinovic, were on hand to emcee the event.
