Fire destroys North Side home

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Youngstown man is homeless after a fire destroyed his North Side home Tuesday evening.

The fire broke out just after 8 p.m. at 361 Redondo Road, which is across from Crandall Park. No one was home when the fire broke out, but the owner arrived as firefighters were battling the blaze.

He said he lives alone in the two-story home, where he has lived for about 15 years. He said he has no idea how the fire started and firefighters said the cause still is under investigation.

The second floor of the house collapsed and at one point, fire was pouring from every window. Firefighters took a defensive stance because they knew they could not save the house.

Youngstown Fire Chief John O’Neill said several kerosene heaters stored in the basement, with fuel in them, helped accelerate the flames.

Several firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze.
