MECCA, Ohio (WKBN) — The extremely cold temperatures have helped create a nice, thick layer of ice on area lakes.
And for anglers, the timing couldn’t be better. There is an ice fishing tournament Sunday on Mosquito Creek Reservoir.
Causeway Sporting Goods, along with the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau, are sponsoring the 5th annual event.
Some 75 teams are registered. Of those, the top six teams will win prizes based on the weight of 15 fish caught during the tournament.
Ironically, not too many people were on the ice Wednesday. Most blame the bitter cold temps and the below zero wind chills. Still, organizers said the conditions on the lake are better this year than last year.
“It’s a lot thicker ice, yeah,” said Oscar Kachenko from Causeway Sporting Goods in Mecca. “We had open water, I believe, last year. Very little ice and open water. But this year they are drilling through 10 to 12 inches plus.”
The tournament kicks off at 7 a.m. at Causeway Sporting Goods, 2233 Greenville Road. Check-in is from 6 to 7:30 a.m. and fishing runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weigh-in is at 3:10 p.m.
