Mooney hosts Chinese New Year

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Cardinal Mooney High School celebrated the Chinese New Year Friday with a group of exchange students attending the school this year.

The staff decided to cook up a Chinese lunch for about a dozen Chinese exchange students after hearing many of them say they were sad about not being home for the holiday.

The Chinese New Year is one of the biggest holidays in the country, comparable to Christmas here in the United States.

The students enjoyed stir fry, dumplings and rice. Brownies were served for dessert.

“I’m very excited. I talked to my parents last night. They were having a very fancy dinner,” said Bowen Guo, exchange student.

Sophomore exchange student Cici Du said the New Year in China involves an exciting night of celebration.

“Do the fireworks, all the big fireworks, and stand out in my yard and we will play all night,” said Du.

The students are from the American Scholar Group exchange program. This is the second year Cardinal Mooney has worked with the program.
