NW Pa. constable to court in rapes of prostitute

A Berea man is facing more jail time after a break-in while he was supposed to be attending a funeral.

ERIE, Pa. (AP) – A northwestern Pennsylvania constable has been ordered to trial on charges he raped a prostitute three times, allegedly by forcing her to have sex at a price he set under the threat of arrest.

The defense attorney for 36-year-old constable Stephen Chamberlain, of Centerville, says the sex was consensual.

Police in Millcreek Township, near Erie, say Chamberlain met the woman at an Erie County motel on Oct. 20 after answering her online escort service ad.

Police say Chamberlain displayed his badge, gun and handcuffs and told her he was an undercover detective who would arrest her for prostitution unless she agreed to his terms.

Under that agreement, Chamberlain paid the woman $40 for sex on that and two other occasions.

A district charge on Tuesday held for court three counts of rape, impersonating an officer, and other charges.
