Birth center hosts cupcake competition

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A sweet event held on Saturday helped support an organization that educates women on healthy pregnancy and child birth.

Friends of the Mahoning Valley Birth Center hosted its 2nd Annual Sweet Life Cupcake Competition at Stambaugh Auditorium from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Eight local professional bakers competed this year, baking up some of the most uniquely designed and flavored cupcakes. Some of the categories included “pregnancy cravings,” “health nut,” and “freestyle.”

Friends of the Mahoning Valley Birth Center is a non-profit aimed at helping women have healthy pregnancies and birth experiences.

“With the infant mortality rate being so high in Mahoning County, and in Ohio in general, compared to nationwide, I think it’s really important that we address that things are being taken care of properly; that evidence-based care,” said Kristi Sanchez, President of the Friends of Mahoning Valley Birth Center.
