Fire destroys house in Mercer County

WEST SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WKBN) – Crews in Mercer County worked to control a house fire early Tuesday, but the flames proved too intense and the structure was destroyed.

The fire broke out about 5 a.m. at a house on Clarksville Street (Route 18).

When crews arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Fire Chief Bill Brown said the fire started at the back of house and quickly spread. Firefighters entered the structured but had to be evacuated.

“It was working at the rear of the structure, but then it got into the floors so we had to evacuate the firemen out of the building due to the weakening of the floors,” said Brown. ” We had to shut off Route 18 due to the number of fire trucks we had along the roadway here and the freezing temperatures. We had to watch out for the safety of our firemen.”

The house was empty at the time of the fire. A family had been living there but moved out several weeks ago.

The house was destroyed. A damage estimate and cause has not been determined.
