YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A statewide youth wrestling tournament is heading back to the Valley. This will be the fourth year the Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling championships will be in Youngstown.
The event is scheduled for junior high teams March 8 and 9 at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown. The grade school championships will take place the following weekend.
Linda Macala with the Mahoning County Visitors Bureau said the event brings thousands of people to the Valley and should have a significant economic impact on the area.
“Those visitor dollars multiply over and over throughout the community,” said Macala. “These are young students that are wrestling, so their parents travel with them, their grandparents like to travel with them, they are eating at our restaurants, shopping, staying in our hotels, and filling their cars with gas.”
The OAC and Covelli Center promoters reached a multi-year agreement to bring the championships back for future years.
