Dr. Shayesteh: Diet & psoriasis connection

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — What we eat can affect the way our body works, and psoriasis is no exception.

Dr. Shayesteh said psoriasis is an auto-immune disease that damages the skin. Since there is no cure, new research suggests that weight, nutrition and diet can affect the disease.

He said obesity, and specifically abdominal obesity, produces an inflammatory chemical that causes psoriasis. He said the more belly fat a person has, the more likely they are to have a flareup.

Psoriasis can be very itchy and painful, so controlling your diet can help reduce the incidents and severity of psoriasis. Other things that can cause flareups are alcohol, sun exposure, processed sugars and foods that are very high in fat.

He said a diet high in fruits and vegetables are better for the condition.
