The Tigers are looking to extend their five-game win streak against the Rockets when they travel to Lowellville on Friday for a season finale rematch from only two weeks ago. In their last match up, Wellsville held off Lowellville to win a w-point contest (58-56) in the beginning of the month. Nate Scott led all scorers with 25 points which included three 3-point baskets. Jordan Sloan also registered double-figures with 11 for the Tigers. Lowellville was led by Paolo DePasquale, who had 22, and Nick Ballone, who scored 15 and added 5 assists.
The last time the Rockets defeated Wellsville was in 2011 (December 20), Lowellville scored 41 points in the game’s final sixteen minutes to take a 69-54 victory into the winter break. Carmen Donofrio made 4 three-pointers and Dean Donatelli scored 24 for the Rockets. Jordan Sloan (19) and Nate Scott (16) scored 35 of the Tigers’ 54 points in the contest.
After falling to Wheeling Central Catholic (69-65) over the weekend, Wellsville rebounded nicely to down Jackson-Milton 76-59 on Tuesday. Nate Scott scored 31. Camden Douglas tallied 14 points and 13 assists while teammate Seth Bradford also posted a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds).
Lowellville defeated Mathews in their last time out, 98-44, on Friday. Paolo DePasquale netted 35 points on 15 of 22 shooting. Pat Mangine also provided a scoring punch as he totaled 23. The Rockets game on Tuesday against Lordstown was cancelled.
-Wellsville is the top seed in Division 4’s Struthers District. The Tigers will face East Canton on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at 7 PM in the Sectional Semifinal. If Wellsville gets by East Canton, they will play Leetonia on Friday (Feb. 28) at 7 PM. The Tigers have played for the District Championship each of the past three seasons and they’ve come up short in each of those contests.
-The 3rd-seeded Lowellville Rockets will face the winner of Lordstown/Western Reserve on Friday (Feb. 28) at 7 PM. The Rockets are in the lower half of the Struthers bracket.
