Memories from the Top O’ The Strip Roller Rink relived

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) — The memories really come rolling back for folks who used to hang out at Top O’ The Strip Roller Rink in Niles.

The rink was destroyed during the tornado of 1985.

The F-5 twister was responsible for 18 deaths in Trumbull and Mercer counties.

For the last four years, a Facebook group has helped to rekindle and remember the old rink.

Hundreds of people got together again tonight at Cortland Roller Rink.

To skate, win door prizes, listen to 80’s tunes– and catch up with old friends.

“Everybody in Niles, in Cortland, Champion, surrounding Trumbull County, even Mahoning County…Top o’ the Strip was the place to be, and it was really sad the day that we lost that wonderful skating rink, and fortunately the folks here are helping us carry on the tradition,” said Justine Thomas, event coordinator.

Organizers are already looking forward to next year– the 30th anniversary of the 1985 tornado.

The original owners of Top O’ The Strip are scheduled to come back and join the festivities in 2015.
