Community holds benefit for local man

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A crowd of people filled the halls of Austintown Middle School on Sunday to help one of their own.

Larry Ortz, who has emphysema and COPD, needs a double lung transplant. So to help pay the medical bills, a pasta dinner called “Take a Breath for Larry” was held.

Organizers said they hope to raise $15,000.

Before he became ill, Ortz was heavily involved in the schools and community. He said it’s great to see that dedication repaid.

“It’s awesome the friends and the people from this community how they come together when someone needs the help like my family does,” said Ortz.

Ortz thought he was close to getting on the transplant list. He learned on Saturday, however, that another round of tests are needed before he can start on the road to recovery.
