Event focuses on empowering women

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — An event held in Boardman on Sunday aimed at empowering women and bringing awareness to issues affecting women.

The Bella Nitesh Spiritual Arts and Education Center hosted the One Billion For Justice event from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The effort is a global project, going on in communities around the world, to bring awareness to domestic violence and issues for women’s empowerment.

The event included self-defense classes, yoga, as well as a number of different workshops.

“We really want women to be educated to make better choices so that they know that they don’t have to put themselves in these situations where they’re taken advantage of, where they’re not empowered,” said Deana Tearshawty, owner of the  Bella Nitesh Spiritual Arts and Education Center.

This was the first time for the event in the Valley. Organizers plan to make it a much bigger event next year.
