Meal program seeks summer sites

Summer feeding

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Neighborhood Ministries of Youngstown is seeking churches or organizations to join in giving free meals to needy children ages 18 and under. Volunteer sites can help offer a daily breakfast, lunch or snack from June 9 through Aug. 22.

Last year, the program was held at 19 sites and served more than 30,000 meals. This year, they hope to be in 25 locations and serve around 40,000 meals.

“There’s certain minimum requirements as far as staffing, but we take care of all of that as far as going through the training and just reviewing sites to make sure they’re going to be eligible,” said Mark Samuel of the Summer Food Service Program. “But, it can be within a building. It could be at a park. So, it’s not necessarily limited it to having a full kitchen. We make arrangements with the local kitchen to provide all the meals. They come prepackaged and ready to go.”

A few of the sites who participated last summer were McGuffey Community Center, Metro Assembly of God and New Bethel Baptist Church.

The deadline to submit a site request is March 31. Neighborhood Ministries can be reached at (330)755-8696 or at
