Sorority donates books to students

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A local sorority has given Youngstown elementary school students the tools they need to succeed.

During Tuesday night’s Youngstown Board of Education meeting, the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta presented 100 books, and other supplies, to principals of Martin Luther King and Williamson Elementary schools.

The packets include science-content books, along with vocabulary and math flash cards. All the items were donated by the sorority, which is based on service, sisterhood and scholarship.

“And each of the books in the baggie, and materials in the baggies, will be handed to the children individually for them to take home, so they can practice this at home. It’s their gift from us,” said Michelle McCollin, president of the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.

The sorority also is  awarding $10,000 in scholarships to high school seniors. The application deadline for those scholarships is March 7.
