Man celebrates 50th by giving back

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) — A Berlin Center man celebrated his 50th birthday by giving back to a local animal shelter.

Self-proclaimed animal lover Joe Smaltz turns 50 on Friday. His wife Marie threw him a surprise birthday party last weekend, and instead of gifts, she asked all of his loved ones to make donations to the Angels for Animals shelter in Canfield.

They received everything from dog food to dog treats and nearly $400 in cash.

“I thought I’m going to do something different and ask for donations for Angels for Animals because that’s where he got his dog that we had to put down about two years ago,” Marie Smaltz said.

Angels for Animals is a mostly volunteer organization and relies strictly on donations. The shelter will use the money raised to pay bills.
