BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – We’ve been hearing about salt shortages for the past several weeks and with another round of snow on the way, finding the winter staple may even get tougher.
It’s down to one bag of salt at Pizza Joe’s in Boardman. Shop owner Mario LaMarco said he doesn’t have to plow his parking lot, but he does have to salt the sidewalk.
“Usually one bag is good, but this year has been a lot worse than other years,” said LaMarco.
But finding that extra bag is going to be a challenge. The Boardman Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowe’s are all out of salt.
“I have been with Home Depot for 23 years. This is the first time I saw it this bad where they’re starting to limit what we can get here as a retailer,” said Manager Buddy Colley, Boardman Home Depot.
The story is the same at Lowe’s. Manager Brian Heckert said the store received two truckloads of salt over the past two weeks, a total of 36 pallets, and they are sold out.
It is a classic case of supply and demand, and salt supplies across the U.S. are down. Suppliers are getting whatever they can to states, counties and townships and limiting what’s available to consumers.
Lowe’s expects to receive an emergency order soon, but it is not guaranteed.
“It is usually a full truck, 18 pallets,” said Heckert. “There are 50 on a palette, so there’s a lot.”
Home Depot was awaiting a delivery of four palettes of salt on Friday, but they are keeping their fingers crossed.
You can bet that as soon as the deliveries come in, the salt will go out the door.
