Man charged for firing on police

Daniel Persing

Niles, Ohio hio (WKBN) – A man from Weathersfield Township was charged after he opened fire on police at his home early Wednesday morning.

According to a police report, Daniel Persing was threatening to kill himself inside his Garland Drive home. When officers arrived on scene, Persing opened fire out the window.

Officers say Persing pulled the trigger on himself, inflicting a flesh wound to his head. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

“He has been here several times before. We have had other cases with improper discharge of a firearm and other charges involving drugs and alcohol,” said Niles City Prosecutor Terry Swauger. “He has been a regular visitor to our court, unfortunately.”

Persing pleaded not guilty to two counts of felonious assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm and having weapons while intoxicated. He is being held in the Trumbull County Jail on $60,000 bond.
