Semi trucks crash trying to avoid hitting each other

HUBBARD, Ohio, (WKBN) – Two tractor trailers nearly missed hitting each when one semi went out of control on Intestate 80 in Hubbard Township.

The accident happened about 3:40 p.m. Friday on I-80, just east of Route 62.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a truck hauling a flatbed trailer driven by Russell Lautanen, 43, of Jefferson, was traveling east on I-80 when he drove off the left side of the road, across the median, and into the westbound lanes.

A box truck driven by Ilija Cepic, 59, of London, Canada, swerved to miss the semi and both trucks hit the guardrail on the north side of I-80 west. The trucks did not collide with each other. Both trailers were empty.

Both drivers sustained minor injuries. Cepic was taken to Saint Elizabeth Health Center. Lautanen refused treatment at the scene.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for two hours and traffic was backed up to Pennsylvania.
